Yes. In fact it's best to use the in-app messaging rather than external email. Your sports related comms are then all in one place and it does not clog up your email.
There's a speech icon in each match listed in My matches. Click that and you can type in messages to all those involved in the match. Even more useful for doubles matches as all four of you can talk together.
Also, whenever an individual is listed in ManageMyMatch there is usually a speech icon next to their name. Click that and you start a conversation with that individual only.
